Domestic Violence

Domestic Violence is described as any incident of threatening behaviour, violence or abuse. Abuse is: "psychological, physical, sexual, financial or emotional, between adults, young adults, or family members, regardless of gender and sexuality." Family members are defined as mother, father, son, daughter, brother, sister and grandparents, whether directly related, in-laws or step-family.

Domestic violence and abuse can happen to anyone, yet the problem is often overlooked, excused, or denied. This is especially true when the abuse is psychological, rather than physical. Noticing and acknowledging the signs, of an abusive relationship is the first step to ending it.

For further information on the warning signs, effects and referral process see the Barnet Multi-Agency Risk Assessment Conference Guidance.
